CASSETTE REWIND: BREEZE PART 1
Since summer is here I’ve decided to put together a nice two part series for the season. While some of these tracks might not be strictly made for the summer I still think they’re great regardless and they carry the vibes of the warm weather. The series is called Breeze (I didn’t too creative with the title) and this is the first part. I decided to stick with a constant upbeat feel and as for part two things will be more slowed down. I hope you all dig this as much as my past mixes and be sure to look out for the second one in early next month. Like always, support the artists however you can and feel free to like and reblog. Have a great summer!

Summer is quickly approaching and if you’re like me then you’re getting those summer tunes ready to provide some good vibes for the hot days and humid nights. I came across 18 year old TL Hugo and his chilled out, high spirited style of lo fi surf jams by way of a great music blog called Cactus Mouth. TL goes by the alias of InnerSummer and he just released his ep titled EPFP earlier this April. It’s a feel good record full of lo-fi goodness, jangly guitars, and hazy pop vocals all provided by Hugo himself. While I’m fond of all seven tracks and most of the lyrics are relatable it was the opening song “Roxas” that spoke to me the most with the words “I know who I am, I am my own man.”. This album came as a complete surprise to me and that could be one of the things that makes it more likable but regardless I highly recommend giving it a listen. EPFP is available on bandcamp for whatever price you choose.
I wrote Roxas about Kingdom Hearts 2. I played the game without having played the first game in the series so I thought Roxas was the main character when it was actually Sora. I was really upset when the character I spent 2 hours getting to like disappeared into Sora. I wrote a song about how I imagine he might feel.
InnerSummer // EPFP
Man, there has gotta be something in the water up in Purchase, NY. There’s a dude up there named TL Hugo who is a classmate of some the LVL UP guys and who records on his own as InnerSummer. His most recent release EPFP is a collection of the best of his singles that he’s been steadily releasing for the year or so.
Proving that there are plenty enough pop hooks to go around in Purchase, TL sets his sights on a cleaner janglier guitar pop sound than his peers. The tracks are warm and unassuming in a way that will hit you right in that on-the-couch comfort zone. In his track “Nothing Special” he actually spills the words “Keep it simple, it’s nothing special.” Now I’m not going to say that there is nothing special about these tracks, but that one line does sort of act as a mantra for what’s on display here. There are no unnecessary flourishes, no left-field curveballs, just honest and heartfelt pop music. In a day when people are constantly searching for something to change up the game or for the next big thing, it’s comforting to have music like InnerSummer to come back to on which you can just chill out.
